Can you write your own copy?

Do you actually need to hire a copywriter?

*Spoiler alert* if you’re asking yourself if you need a copywriter, the answer is probably yes.

If you’re a business owner, there’s no reason why you can’t do your copywriting yourself. But it might be easier, and a more effective use of your time to hire a copywriter. A professional copywriter will see things about your product that you wouldn't even think to share. They can ensure that your copy conveys the right emotions, guides the reader towards taking the action you’d like them to take, stands out from your competitors, and they can organically work in SEO keywords so that more people can find you!

If you’d like to have a go at writing your own copy, here are my top tips:

1. Convey your benefit to the customer.

Please, don’t be a salesperson (if you missed my cake analogy from my last blog post, I highly recommend you check that out for a “what not to do”). It feels counterintuitive, but the copy is not about you, or your business. It’s about the reader, and how your business could benefit them.

Think of it like when you recommend something to a friend. You might say something along the lines of, “Hey, I just got this new thing. It is incredible! You would probably like it because…”

2. Use. Less. Words.

Nuff said.

This is the mistake I see the most often. People’s attention span is short. Feel free to write everything down, and then trim it back to the bare minimum. Ask yourself, “Does each sentence provide value to my reader?” If you’re not sure, get rid of it.

3. Have a CTA.

A call to action doesn’t have to be pushy, but you always have to make it clear what you’d like the reader to do.

Don’t ask too much though. People are lazy. Make it super easy for them.

When should you hire a copywriter?

If you’re unsure if you can do your brand, or product justice, hire a professional. If your shower wouldn’t turn on, but you knew there was water to the sink, you wouldn’t mess around with it. You’d call a plumber, because goddammit! No one gets in the way of you and your shower!

There is an art to copywriting, that’s why I call myself a wordsmith. It can take a lot of time, and mental energy, and it is easy to get it wrong, which could mean missing out on valuable leads.

If you’d like to hire a copywriter, I’d love to tell your story and connect you with your perfect customers! Feel free to reach out through my contact form, and let's get writing.
